The Way, the Truth and the Life: Theological Resources for a Pilgrimage to a Global Anglican Future
By popular demand we have produced a short print run of this book including the text of the Jerusalem Statement and Declaration, but a commentary on the Declaration is currently being prepared by the GAFCON Theological Resource Team and the book will therefore be re-published in conjunction with this in Spring 2009. Over 1000 senior leaders from seventeen provinces in the Anglican Communion, representing 35 million church-going Anglicans, have registered for the Global Anglican Future Conference and Pilgrimage (GAFCON) in Jerusalem in June 2008. GAFCON has stated that the goals of the Pilgrimage are ‘to provide an opportunity for fellowship, so that we continue to experience and proclaim the transforming love of Christ; to develop a renewed understanding of our identity as Anglican Christians, and to prepare for an Anglican future in which the Gospel is uncompromised and Christ-centred mission is a top priority.’ This preparatory document sets out why we have decided to meet, what is at stake, and what are the possible ways forward. ‘What had been “in the works” for some years – the challenge to the authority of the Bible, in all matters of faith and practice, both within the Church and in personal morality – suddenly became a public reality … in 2003 … the Anglican Communion was at a crossroads; it had to decide, without further hesitation, which way to go. One road, that of compromising Biblical truth, would lead to destruction and disunity. The other road might have its own obstacles, but it would lead to God and to life. It is this second road that has brought us to GAFCON. What beliefs do GAFCON Anglicans hold? This book was printed in Israel for the conference participants, who took copies back to their congregations around the world. It is currently being revised and updated with the text of the Jerusalem Declaration and a commentary thereon by the GAFCON Theological Resource Group, and the new book is planned for release before the end of 2008.
