Language & Liturgy

These 3 essays focus on the question of language in liturgy, particularly regarding the revision of the Book of Common Prayer and the introduction of the Alternative Service Book in 1980. Bray stresses the richness of the BCP and inadequacies of the ASB. Wilcockson outlines the strengths of the ASB and weaknesses of the BCP. Leaver draws the book to a close with the argument that there is a need both for continuity and contemporaneous expression of the faith in liturgical language.

Gerald Bray is Director of Research for The Latimer Trust, following a career teaching church history and historical theology. His brief includes mentoring theologians, writing, and taking on speaking engagements, to encourage Christians to stand up for Biblical truth in church, work, and theology.

Steve Wilcockson is vicar of St Paul’s Howell Hill, in Surrey.

Robin Leaver is Professor of Sacred Music at Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton, USA. He is a noted Bach scholar and hymnologist, with numerous publications to his name.
