Future Patterns of Episcopacy: Reflections in Retirement

If there is a case for change in one of the most conservative institutions on earth, the episcopate can hardly be immune to the new patterns of episcopacy which may emerge.

Stuart Blanch, now Lord Blanch, was Bishop of Liverpool from 1966-1975, and Archbishop of York from 1975-1983. His Study was written without benefit of the report Episcopal Ministry, which came before the General Synod about a month before his Study was published. It is therefore an independent discussion of the same subject, covering the history and origins of the Episcopacy, his own personal experience as a Bishop, and reflections looking to the future on 'Giantism', Pastoral Care, Theology and Mission.
