Liberal Catholicism: Charles Gore and the Question of Authority
Throughout his life (1853-1932) Charles Gore struggled to achieve a synthesis between freedom of conscience and ecclesiastical authority. Where these came into conflict, which should prevail?
The issues were not new, and are with us still. This study of the life and thought of Gore concludes in Gore's own words that 'what we need is a revived sense of rational loyalty to that particular portion of the Church we belong to, a well as to the great Church Catholic which lies beyond'.
Geoffrey Grimes, the author of this study, is a retired solicitor engaged in pastoral work at Addingon, near West Malling, Kent.
