A Critique of Spirituality

This booklet is written for Christian teachers, leaders and spiritual guides. It is intended to add discriminating balance to the two very useful and positive Latimer Studies on the subject by D A Ousley: LS43 The Way of Holiness 1: Principles and LS46 The Way of Holiness 2: Issues .

Those of us with responsibility for Christian teaching and leadership owe it to our communities and churches to be discriminating. This booklet examines "Suspect Spirituality" in a variety of forms, and wishes to root discernment in the following four biblical principles: rational content; faith which has a real content as its object and a serious obedience in its commitment to God in Christ; real repentance which involves a change of life; and a serious 'holiness without which no man may see God'.

Preb J F D Pearce was Rector of Limehouse in the Diocese of London and formerly Chairman of Latimer House Council.
