Elders in Every City

Elders in Every City explores the emergence and function of ordained ministry against the background of first century Judaism, and draws out important lessons for today's church. The apostle Paul instructed Titus to 'appoint elders in every city' (Titus 1:5), but what were those elders meant to do? By examining the development of Christian presbyters and bishops in the New Testament and early church, this historical survey helps us to rediscover the clergy's original and authentic purpose.
